Terroir:
The vineyards are located in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation within the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The Syrah and Grenache vines are planted on a limestone plateau with a north-facing orientation, providing a cooler microclimate. The Mourvèdre is grown on plots with rolled pebbles, similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with both south and northwest exposures. This diverse terroir contributes to the wine's complexity and balance.
Viticulture:
Domaine de Montcalmès practices organic viticulture and began incorporating biodynamic methods in 2012, receiving organic certification in 2015. The yields are kept low at 25 hl/ha, and the grapes are hand-harvested. Each parcel is vinified separately to maintain the unique characteristics of the terroir.
Winemaking:
The grapes are destemmed and undergo a long maceration period of about one month to extract maximum flavor and color. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is aged for two years in old oak barrels from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, followed by an additional 3 to 6 months in stainless steel vats. The wine is then blended and bottled, resting on racks for another 5 to 8 months before release.
Tasting Notes:
Domaine de Montcalmès, Terrasses du Larzac features a deep and intense red color. The nose is complex, with aromas of red and black fruits, liquorice, and garrigue. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with tender, fine tannins, offering flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, spices, and a hint of musk. The finish is long and generous, showcasing the wine's elegance and aging potential.
